The first thing I will do as a missionary is start my scripture study with scripture. The scripture study questions I use for missionary study are: "What did you read?" "How does what you read affect your life?" "Who were you taught by?" "What does your mission statement say about being a missionary?" The answer to making scripture study meaningful can be the first lesson of your new missionary's new study course: "Are You Responsible For Your Learning?" The formula to make this work is simple, yet often under-used: you must bring more in if you intend to learn more. The first thing you need to remember is that you don't just read the scriptures for missionary study. There are other reasons why you are reading the New Testament. I share these reasons with you below. Missionaries Need A New Bible The very first thing I tell new missionaries when they start a scripture study is that they need a fresh set of scriptures. The scriptures they use are great and can help them, but it is important that they read new testament scriptures that are relevant to their mission. The New Testament is filled with personal revelation from God and He wants them to bear witness to others of what He has revealed. Missionaries Have An Abundance Of Resources Another reason missionary needs to have a new scripture study is that he or she might have a lot of resources around them to use for teaching. We had been instructed by the Lord to go there and preach the gospel. I had two small boys under the age of three who were not too keen on the scriptures I was preaching. What I found most helpful was the Bible study tool as it simplifies scripture reading. Elder Slates Use The scriptures from the scriptures I brought with me. I have also utilized the scriptures that I have taken out of the New Testament book of Acts. I have kept all of my copy of Epistle of Laban, also known as the Book of Moses in my back pocket since I discovered it while serving in the Philippines. The scripture study I am using now has verses from the Book of Ruth, from the Book of Jerusalem, and also from the Book of Kings. All of these have been inspired by the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. As you can see, scripture study with the LDS tools app does not have to be boring. It can be fun if you allow it to be. If you find yourself sitting in front of the computer and not studying, or even reading the scripture books that you have, take time to think about what scriptures you can include in your next sermon. Then when you get up in front of your pulpit and give your talk, remember to include those scriptures. Remember that it is okay to refer back to the scriptures from time to time. You don't have to always jump to the same verse all the time. For you to get more enlightened about this subject, see this post: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible_study.
